Tortilla chips are a delicious snack that pair perfectly with loads of toppings. Since February 24th is National Tortilla Chip Day, Dr. Robert Becker and the rest of our office team wanted to share a few tooth-friendly ideas to celebrate. Just be sure to brush after snacking to prevent gum disease in Racing, WI.

Freshen Up Your Nachos and Dips

Tortilla chips are the perfect canvas for all kinds of tasty creations, especially nachos. Unfortunately, many nacho preparations are full of fat and salt. Bean dips and other heavy toppings can also pile on the calories. Here are some ideas to help you rethink your favorite tortilla chip recipes:

  • Mash pinto beans or black beans in a food processor along with a dash of salt, lime juice, and cilantro to create a low-fat bean dip that can be used as a foundation for other preparations or as a chip topping all on its own. You can also mix in some chopped Roma tomatoes for some extra flavor and color.
  • Make California-style nachos with black or pinto beans, Spanish rice, chopped tomatoes, and a sprinkling of chopped cilantro. Use freshly grated cheese instead of cheese sauce or a bunch of melted cheese. This will give you a little more control over the nutritional profile of the dish. Some smoky chipotle chicken or low-fat ground beef cooked with garlic and onion can round out the dish into a snacking centerpiece.
  • Combine some flavorful salsa with homemade bean dip. Stir well. Garnish with chopped cilantro or slices of fresh limes for an extra zip of flavor.

A Snack for Just About Everyone

Tortilla chips should be avoided by people wearing braces. Anyone with sore and tender gums might also find tortilla chips difficult to chew. Laser gum surgery can help repair gum tissue damaged by advancing periodontal disease.
