Wouldn’t it be nice if you could eat anything you want and not feel guilty about it? You’re in luck, because National Eat What You Want Day is the perfect excuse to do just that, and it’s coming up on May 11th! While it is a well-known fact that some of the most delicious “junk” foods are not good for your oral health and can even contribute to the development of gum disease in Bethel, CT, it is ok to splurge and eat what you want every once in a while. Just make sure you keep up with your oral health even more on Eat What You Want Day or any other day you decide to indulge in treats. Here are a few suggestions for good oral care.

1. Brush Twice Each Day

A surprising number of people choose to brush just once each day – either in the morning or at night. However, brushing twice per day is one of the best ways to prevent the buildup of harmful bacteria on the teeth. It is also a great way to minimize your chances of developing gum disease.

2. Floss Regularly

We recommend that you floss once per day, but sometimes you may need to floss more frequently than that. This is especially true if you chew on sticky candy that gets lodged between the teeth. Rather than leaving it there to fester and contribute to the development of plaque, use some floss to get it out as quickly as possible.

3. Rinse With Water After Eating

It’s ok to take advantage of sugary foods and drinks during Eat What You Want Day, but try rinsing your mouth with water afterward. This will remove some of the sugary buildup on your teeth and will make your mouth a less conducive environment for harmful bacteria.

4. Visit Your Dentist

Whether you have dental pain or not, regular checkups with your dentist are essential for maintaining good oral health. Schedule your checkup today with Drs. Ken SanGiacomo or Joann Perrotta by calling Bethel Gentle Dental.
