Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, commonly referred to as TMJ, is a disorder related to problems in the jaw, its joint or surrounding facial muscles. The syndrome might be caused by poor posture, stress that results in clenching the jaw, or previous trauma to the jaw. Women between the ages of 18 and 44 and people who have chronic inflammatory arthritis or increased response to stress are more likely to be diagnosed with the disorder. People who have TMJ usually suffer from a number of symptoms that must be treated by a periodontist.

Pain or Tenderness

The pain related to TMJ typically occurs in the jaw area, especially where it opens and closes. However, pain can also be felt in the face, neck and shoulders. Sufferers might also feel pain in the ear area when speaking, yawning or chewing. TMJ can cause other hearing-related symptoms such as ringing or an inability to hear correctly.

Stuck Jaw

One of the most common symptoms people who suffer from TMJ in Staunton, VA report is the feeling that the jaws are locked or stuck in one position. In many cases, the sufferer will be unable to open his or her mouth very wide. Chewing and speaking might be difficult or impossible depending on the severity of the case.

Odd Noises

TMJ syndrome often causes noises when opening or closing the mouth. The sufferer might hear popping or clicking sounds. It could also resemble a grating noise.

Other Symptoms

While pain, tightness and clicking noises are the most common symptoms, people who might suffer from TMJ should call a periodontist for any of the following.

  • Facial swelling
  • Toothaches or earaches
  • Aches in the head or neck
  • Pain in the upper shoulder
  • Dizziness

Minor cases of TMJ are likely to go away on their own. However, many people suffer from severe or prolonged symptoms. If you believe you need treatment for TMJ in Staunton, VA, please contact Dr. Steven Saunders, Dr. Victor Saunders or Dr. Jeff Dickson at 540-907-4194.
