Gum disease is common among adults, but it’s one of the most preventable dental problems. Gum disease has been linked to strokes, heart disease and diabetes. It also leads to tooth decay and tooth loss. Fortunately, it can be avoided with good dental hygiene and care. Make sure to see your dentist for twice-a-year cleanings. Take care of your teeth between professional dental care. Here are five bad habits to quit to protect your teeth from gum disease:

  1. Smoking

Smoking is one of the most destructive habits for your mouth and teeth. It causes bad breath, tooth discoloration and leads to gum disease as well as oral cancer. Quitting reduces your risk of many health issues associated with smoking.

  1. Drinking sugared drinks throughout the day

When you constantly expose your teeth to sugar, it causes plaque to be produced in your mouth. This leads to tooth and gum decay. Drink water frequently which is both hydrating for your body and healthier for your teeth.

  1. Eating unhealthy snacks

Starchy and sugary snacks are another problem that lead to gum disease. The residue left behind by these types of food often lead to plaque buildup, which is the precursor to gum disease.  Chew baby carrots or celery, which do not expose your teeth to sugar.

  1. Not flossing and brushing enough

You should brush at least twice a day, for at least two minutes each time. Flossing should be an everyday task, too. Ask your dentist or hygienist for a demonstration to make sure you are flossing correctly. Make sure to change your toothbrush every two to three months.

  1. Brushing with a hard toothbrush

A firm toothbrush can increase tooth sensitivity because it can irritate the gums and wear away the tooth enamel. Ask your dentist what type of toothbrush is best for you.
