Simply put, a prosthodontist is a dentist who has received additional training in prosthodontics, which is  a branch of dentistry concerned with diagnosing, addressing, rehabilitating and properly maintaining the oral problems of patients who have missing or inadequate teeth as well as those with maxillofacial complications. Specialties that fall into the expertise of a prosthodontist include implant dentistry, dentures, bridges, temporomandibular issues and cosmetics.

The Difference

When comparing a prosthodontist with a dentist, one of the main differences is prosthodontists are better qualified to help you replace missing teeth or anything else that happens to be missing from the inside of your mouth. While you can allow a dentist to help you replace gums or teeth, you have to remember they often don’t have the extra training and expertise prosthodontists possess.

The Best of Both Worlds

Rather than think of this as an either/or situation, it’s better to work with both dentists and prosthodontists to take proper care of your oral health. After all, prosthodontists often lead teams made up of dentists and other oral specialists to do what’s best for patients.
