Many individuals may not be familiar with an endodontic corrective treatment also known as a retreatment. This process is not usually necessary; however in some cases it can be essential to maintaining proper oral health. Endodontic Retreatment

Endodontic retreatment is the process of retreating a root canal. Sometimes a tooth may not heal properly after an initial treatment, so an additional treatment is required to prevent any new infections or damage. To accomplish this, a retreatment reopens the tooth and removes the filling that was placed in the root canal. The tooth is examined for any new infections, and removes any that are found. New filling is placed within the root canal and it is sealed with a temporary filling. A crown is placed on the tooth to protect it, once the tooth heals.

When it is Needed

A retreatment is needed when a tooth does not heal properly after a root canal. There are a few different reasons why this may occur.

• Complicated canal anatomy was not detected in the first procedure.
• Curved or narrow canals were not treated initially.
• After the treatment the placement of the crown was delayed.
• The tooth sustained a fracture.
• New decay or a defective crown exposed the root canal to infection.
