Gum disease does more than ruin your teeth and affect your mouth. At its most basic stage, it’s referred to as gingivitis, and the symptoms may be minimal and treatment is simple. Once the disease has progressed, you may need aggressive treatment from a dentist in Rock Hill, SC in order to save your teeth and protect your health. Gum disease affects other systems in the body, and has been linked to several serious health conditions.

Heart Disease

Researchers believe that periodontal disease is directly associated with heart disease. They have not uncovered a direct link between the two, but have proven that if periodontal disease is present, the patient is more likely to develop heart disease.

Inflammation caused by gum disease may be the culprit, and existing heart conditions can also be exacerbated by periodontal disease.

Diabetes

People without diabetes are less likely to have periodontal disease than those with diabetes. This may be simply because diabetics are more prone to infections. Diabetics that don’t control their blood sugar and insulin levels are especially at risk for periodontal disease, which is also a complication of diabetes.

Experts believe that the relationship between periodontal disease and diabetes works from both angles, making it hard to get either condition under control without the proper treatment.

Other Conditions

Several other conditions have been linked to periodontal disease, including:

  • Cancer – Men with periodontal disease are 49% more likely to get kidney cancer, 30% more likely to get blood cancers, and 54% more likely to get pancreatic cancer.
  • Respiratory Disease – Pneumonia can be caused when bacteria that originates in the mouth is aspirated into the lungs.
  • Osteoporosis – Bone loss in the jaw from periodontal disease is linked with osteoporosis.

The development of these systemic conditions highlight the fact that patients should quickly seek treatment if they fear they are suffering from periodontal disease.
