If you have gum recession, you know firsthand how uncomfortable and embarrassing it can be. Gum recession can increase tooth sensitivity by exposing the roots of the tooth. Over time, extreme recession can even lead to tooth loss. To prevent this from happening, it’s important to receive treatment when you notice signs of recession. While many doctors recommend gum grafting as the top treatment for receded gums, there is a less invasive option available. The Pinhole Surgical Technique™ (PST™) is a revolutionary procedure that treats receded gums without a single scalpel incision. Here’s how it compares to traditional gum grafting procedures.

Procedural Differences

Gum grafting is performed by surgically removing tissue from an area of the body (most frequently the roof of the mouth) and attaching it to the receding area with sutures. The site the tissue is removed from must also be stitched up and allowed to heal. You can usually return to normal activity within a few hours of receiving this procedure, but the healing process can be lengthy and painful.

Unlike gum grafting, PST™ doesn’t require any tissue to be removed from the mouth or attached to the receded site. Instead, Dr. Vikram Gandhi makes a tiny hole in the gums. He uses this hole to gain access to the inside of the gum tissue and gently loosen it from the teeth. Once loosened, the tissue can be freely prodded downward (or upward on the bottom teeth) to cover more of the teeth. Your periodontist does not use stitches or scalpels during the PST™ procedure. As a result of its minimal invasiveness, the chance of complications is significantly reduced and recovery time is quick and minimally painful.
