It has become standard procedure to undergo a wisdom tooth extraction. Dr. Vikram Gandhi is very experienced in oral surgery at Firewheel Dental Implants and Periodontics and provides this routine procedure to patients.

If you are planning on seeing an oral surgeon for an extraction, it is important to support your body with the right nutrients before and after the procedure to minimize recovery time and maximize healing.

Before Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Supporting your body before the procedure facilitates your recovery and reduces the time it takes to heal. This starts by eating lots of fruits and vegetables. It is also beneficial to consume protein so you have the necessary amino acids to rebuild after the procedure. Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking for at least a day or two prior to the appointment.

The day of the procedure, you need to follow your oral surgeon’s directions on what to eat. Depending on the anesthesia, you might need to fast for several hours or you may be able to eat a light meal.

After the Procedure

You will not be able to eat your normal diet for at least 24 hours after your wisdom tooth extraction. The good news is that you have every excuse to eat ice cream and drink milkshakes. This is because you need to eat foods that are soft and do not require any chewing. Cold food is best, as it also helps to dull the pain in the mouth. Examples of food to eat include:

• Soup
• Jell-O
• Mashed potatoes
• Milkshakes
• Smoothies
• Apple sauce
• Yogurt
• Mouse
• Pudding

Just remember to choose foods that have lots of vitamins, minerals, protein, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties to provide your body what it needs to heal. Just because you can eat ice cream with no guilt does not mean that it is all you should eat.
