Millions of American have gum disease, and because the condition can be virtually painless in its early forms, many don’t know they have a problem until it’s become serious. Gum disease progresses through several different stages until extensive damage is done and teeth are lost. Because it is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults, it’s important that you are aware of the stages of gum disease and how to prevent it when possible.

The Three Stages

Plaque is a colorless, sticky film that constantly forms on the teeth. When it is not removed properly, it can cause inflammation of the gums which leads to deterioration of the tissue surrounding your teeth. Gum disease progresses through the following stages:

  • Gingivitis: the earliest stage where buildup occurs mostly at the gum line. When daily flossing and brushing doesn’t remove plaque, toxins are created that cause irritation to the gum tissue. Signs of gingivitis include bleeding and tenderness while brushing and flossing.
  • Periodontitis: a more advanced stage where the supporting fibers and bone are damaged beyond repair. Pockets often form underneath the gumline and plaque and food are trapped in them, making the problem worse.
  • Advanced Periodontitis: the final stages, the bone and fibers supporting the teeth are completely destroyed and the teeth are free to loosen or shift. This can quickly lead to loss of teeth or changes to your bite.

While it may be impossible to completely reverse the occurrence of gum disease, it is possible for a periodontist like Dr. Codelli to treat it. There are several different treatment options:
