Potential Candidates for Gum Surgery

Many Americans suffer with gum problems as they grow older. If you aren’t happy with the way your gums look or feel, you should visit your Dr. Perna right away to find out if you qualify for gum surgery in Oak Park, IL.  The quicker you receive treatment for your gum issues, the better. Minor gum tissue problems can quickly become major health concerns if allowed to progress without prompt treatment.

Symptoms of Gum Problems

There are many gum issues that can be improved with gum surgery. If you have any of the following problems, you may want to schedule a consultation with your dentist to see if you’re a good candidate for surgery:

  • Gum recession
  • Overgrown gums (“gummy” smile)
  • Gum disease
  • Tongue-tie
  • Lip-tie

Gum recession is a common problem that is typically caused by one of two things: overly aggressive brushing or gum disease. Fortunately, gum surgery can improve your smile by targeting diseased gum tissue and removing it. You can then have oral tissue from another area of your mouth grafted into the receded area to improve the appearance of your smile.

Overgrown gums are not usually due to an underlying health problem, but they can be an embarrassment. Gum surgery can be used to remove excess gum tissue and make your gums appear more proportional to your teeth.

Finally, gum surgery can be used to treat tongue-tie and lip-tie. Tongue-tie is a malformation of the frenulum (a band of tissue) that tethers the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. Lip-tie is a malformation of the upper frenulum, which attaches the upper lip too tightly to the upper gum.
