Lower tooth gum recession

Gum recession is an embarrassing and common problem that affects over 64 million people in the United States alone. It’s also a potentially serious oral condition that can lead to tooth loss and oral pain if treatment is not received. While many periodontists still recommend gum grafting for those with gum recession, Drs. Mario Canal and Ben Calem use a minimally invasive procedure called the Pinhole Surgical Technique® in their Medford, NJ and Moorestown, NJ offices to gently and quickly treat receded gum tissue.

How The Pinhole Surgical Procedure Works

The Pinhole Surgical Technique was invented by John Chao, DDS. It gives patients a minimally painful alternative to gum grafting surgery. Drs. Canal and Calem perform the procedure in the following steps:

  • Create “pinhole” entry points in the gum tissue above the receded areas
  • Use small tools to separate the gums from the teeth
  • Reposition the gum tissue by pushing it upward (on lower teeth) or downward (on upper teeth) to cover a greater portion of the teeth
  • Insert collagen strips between the gums and teeth to prevent the gum tissue from sliding back again

You may have noticed scalpels and sutures are not part of the Pinhole Surgical Technique. This is because they are not needed. Due to the minimally invasive nature of the procedure, patients experience very little bleeding and have a reduced chance of developing post-operative complications.

A Permanent Solution To Gum Recession

The Pinhole Surgical Technique is a permanent solution for gum recession and provides lasting results as long as the underlying cause of recession is addressed. If gum disease caused your gums to recede, you’ll need to receive gum disease treatment if you want your gum rejuvenation results to last as long as any other procedure.
