Gum disease is one of the most common diseases in the United States and affects more than 80 percent of adults. The difficult thing is that so many people fear treatment that they may avoid it completely, and when left untreated this disease can lead to loss of bone, receding gums and eventually tooth loss. As dental technology has advanced, so has treatment for gum disease, and LANAP is an effective way to deal with this damaging disease.

How Does It Work?

Patients are given local anesthesia and the periodontist inserts a tiny laser fiber between the gums and the teeth. This allows for disease and infection to be removed without cutting away the healthy gum tissue. Tartar and plaque are removed from the tooth roots and the laser then seals the pocket with a firm, stable fibrin blood clot.

What Are the Benefits?

Traditionally to treat gum disease, there is a need for cutting and stitching up an area but the laser technology allows patients to enjoy a less invasive but still successful treatment. Some of the benefits that come from laser surgery include:

  • Less swelling, gum loss, sensitivity, bleeding and pain
  • Faster recovery time; many patients drive themselves home or back to work after a treatment session
  • Decreased risk of infections after operation
  • Supporting gum tissues are regenerated
  • Faster, more comfortable healing period than traditional surgery

Dr. Amato is highly experiencd with the LANAP protocol to treat patients and is proud to offer this option to those that fear treatment for gum disease. He has received special training and has hands-on experience using laser technology to treat various stages of the disease.
