Lasers in Dentistry: More Than a Sci-Fi Tool

Drs. James and McMurphy use a BIOLASE laser that emits a soft light. Although it appears to be a simple light, this laser is capable of penetrating soft tissue to address specific dental concerns. One of the most popular uses for such a laser is gum disease treatment by cleaning out bacteria hiding in pockets around the teeth. The laser targets only diseased areas and leaves healthy areas alone, allowing a receding gum line to attach to the teeth once again.

It can also be used directly on tooth dentin to help treat sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures. Exposed dentin is what gives the sensitive sensation around the teeth, and our laser can treat the dentin surface to reduce sensitivity.
