It is unfortunately true that many people underestimate the importance of their oral health. No matter how many times you have been encouraged to brush your teeth, it may not become a priority until you see the benefits for yourself. When it comes to preventing disease and ailment, caring for your periodontal health is an essential and proactive step that will have lasting benefits up to and including the prevention of cancer. If you are surprised, you shouldn’t be. Your periodontal health is vital!

Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month

November is pancreatic cancer awareness month, and it is also the perfect time to invest in the health of your gums. Why? Several studies have established the link between periodontal disease and pancreatic cancer. One showed that the bacteria found in infections can be a precursor to cancerous cell growth while another confirmed this and detailed an increased likelihood of the cancer among patients with a history of gum disease.

Treating Gum Disease
It is a good idea to visit your periodontist for exams at least annually. Estimates state that a little less than half of all adults in the United States are infected with periodontal disease, and if you are in that group, you need to get treatment. Failure to do so can result in a worsening condition and the potential for cancer. Treatment options, however, may include the following:

  • Medication or antibiotics
  • Medical procedure or surgery
  • Cleaning and polishing
