As part of Oral Cancer Awareness Month, the experts of Nova Perio Specialists are here to tell you more about why detection and treatment of oral cancer are essential. You might be part of an at-risk group, and you should also know how to look for signs of oral cancer at home between appointments.

Groups That Are the Most At-Risk for Oral Cancer

While there’s a chance anyone could be diagnosed with oral cancer, some individuals are more at-risk than others. These individuals include:

  • Heavy alcohol drinkers
  • Smokers
  • Individuals with poor diet
  • Those who work outside
  • Individuals with HPV
  • Anyone who takes medication that suppresses the immune system

If you’re a member of any of the above groups, it’s essential you schedule regular oral cancer screenings with a periodontist. Early detection could go a long way in ensuring you receive proper treatment and protect your overall health.

The Screening

During your oral cancer screening, a periodontist will inspect your head, neck and mouth. You’ll also be asked about your family medical history as well as your personal medical history. Some of the symptoms and signs you might have oral cancer include unusual bleeding, non-healing ulcers, a tooth that’s suddenly come loose and swelling. If you are found to have cancer, know there are treatment options.

You can also check yourself for cancer when you’re away from the periodontist’s office. Use a flashlight and gauze to check the roof and floor of the mouth, cheeks, lips, back of the throat and tongue for lumps, lesions, discoloration and changes in tooth or tongue texture.
